Since George Daniels is teaching you how to make a watch there's only a bit of subject-relevant history and it certainly isn't a glossy photo-book, but Watchmaking is still one of the few technical manuals I also feel would be not out of place on a coffee table. Think a textbook designed to let a very (and I mean very as in thousands and thousands of hours) dedicated pupil build their own movement without the consultation of a master watchmaker or a school program whatsoever. I love the book because the writing and explanation is entirely without pretense. It basically takes the reader from "how does a watch work" to a complete working movement through a very dense and thorough explanation of each step: first making the tools, then understanding the concepts, and then actually machining each and every part of a movement.
